Overview: Up for sale is a small woodblock print by acclaimed Japanese print artist, Haku Maki (1924-2000). Maki is the assumed name of Maejima Taadaki. Maki studied under the famous printmaker Onchi, and quickly became acclaimed for his embossed prints, dealing with a range of subjects, particularly those of kanji (Chinese characters). I''ve done quite a bit of research into this print, and as I understand it, in 1970, Felix Juda, a super-collector who was close with Onchi, commissioned Maki to make a series of card prints through the Red Lantern Shop in Kyoto. This print is one of those that were commissioned. This is shows the Kanji for "Love" in Japanese on a yellow background with a blue sun. This print is tipped to a backing card which indicates it was commissioned by Juda. The print is titled (with the Kanji) at center, signed Haku Maki at lower right and numbered (221/250). An exquisite and rare piece that any Maki collector would love.
